Alongside the release of the HGUC Xi Gundam, the Xi Gundam Vs. Penelope Funnel Missile Effect Set was also released. It bundles the HGUC Xi Gundam and Penelope together and adds a ¥3,000-worth of effect parts, bringing the total to ¥15,800 — PG territory price-wise.

The Xi Gundam and Penelope are identical to the standard releases right down to the molded colors, except that the stand joint parts have been removed from Xi Gundam's K runner. Since the effect set already includes clear stand joint parts, it makes sense to leave them out — though I do wonder if it was really necessary to go to the trouble of modifying the runner just to remove them.

The new additions in this kit are a bunch of clear yellow effect parts depicting funnel missiles being fired, two clear action bases, and various joint parts. There are 24 funnel missile effect parts in total — 8 each of three different lengths — split evenly so each of the two kits gets 12. You can arrange these freely on the horizontal effect part, which has 14 holes, and they hold in place pretty firmly so putting it all together isn't much of a hassle.

The action bases connect solidly to both the Xi Gundam and Penelope, so pulling off the scene is easier than it looks, and displaying them in full-equipped form makes for a seriously impressive setup. That said, it does take up a fair amount of shelf space — you'll probably need at least 36cm of height, 40cm of depth, and 50cm of width. On top of that, this kit also comes with waterslide decals that aren't included in the standard releases — and there are nearly as many as a Ver.Ka kit. In my case it took me roughly 6–7 hours while watching TV, but since most of the decals are small and rectangular, the difficulty level isn't that high.

Sure, it's pricey, but between the massive size and the flashy effect parts, it really does feel worth the money. Two HGUC kits that are already MG-sized on their own, plus all these wild effect parts on top of that — if you're into dramatic, action-packed displays, this kit is definitely worth the investment. :-)
