HGUC AMX-101

Galluss-J

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers + Panel lining

The Galluss-J from Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ has been released as an HGUC kit. Ever since the original 1/144 Galluss-Jcame out back in 1986, it's finally gotten the HG treatment after 39 years. Maybe because it's such a classic mobile suit, but the overall package has a slightly old-school feel for a modern HG release.

It does use a polycap-less joint system like modern kits, and thankfully the joints are solid without being overly stiff — but the articulation is a bit disappointing, which might just be a limitation of the mobile suit's design. The pipe attached to the mouth makes it hard to turn the head, and the rotating mono-eye barely moves at all. The double-jointed shoulders have a narrow range of motion, and the knees don't bend very far either. The waist can't rotate either because of the pipe connecting it to the lower body — so for a modern kit, the articulation does feel a bit frustrating overall.

The color separation is decent enough to give it a solid straight-build look, but the main vernier areas are handled with stickers, which feels a bit out of place. On the plus side, the arm punch is recreated with swappable parts, and the chest missile pod is also included as a swap-out piece — though the fit on those swappable chest parts is weak and they tend to fall off easily. In my case, I just stuck a piece of clear tape on one of the contact surfaces to reinforce it, which worked fine, but it's still a bit of an annoying issue. There's also a gimmick where you can swap in a mono-eye part with the sticker facing a different direction, though the swapping process is a little fiddly.

So even accounting for the fact that it's a classic mobile suit, it does feel a bit underwhelming for a kit released in 2025 — it has more of a HGUC-from-10-to-15-years-ago kind of vibe. That said, the articulation and gimmicks being a bit lacking doesn't mean the kit itself is bad — the sculpt and build quality are clean and up to modern standards. Either way, if you've got a lot of fond memories of the ZZ era, just having this kit exist is something to be grateful for, but for those who aren't familiar with this mobile suit, it's a tough one to recommend outright. :-)
