Kotobukiya Cross Frame Girl

Star GaoGaiGar

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is Star GaoGaiGar released as part of the Cross Frame Girl series. It's a combination of the Cross Frame Girl GaoGaiGarreleased in 2019 and the Cross Frame Girl Goldymarg & Stealth Gao II setthat was released alongside it. Basically the runners are unchanged — it's just the two kits bundled together — though one of GaoGaiGar's face parts has been swapped out for a winking expression. (See review photos)

So for the detailed breakdown of each individual kit, please check those respective reviews. In this review I'll be focusing on Star GaoGaiGar as the combined form. Both kits make use of a ton of accessory parts to allow for a huge variety of configurations, and the end result is a kit with an absolutely staggering range of build options — arguably the most versatile we've seen. In short, there are a lot of parts, assembly takes a while, and there's real fun in recreating all the different forms one by one. That said, the workload is pretty substantial, and the thick 80-page manual says it all.

The most important connection — GaoGaiGar and Stealth Gao II — locks together solidly, so pulling off the Star GaoGaiGar configuration itself is no problem. The issue is that GaoGaiGar's joints are on the loose side to begin with, and carrying the added weight of Stealth Gao II on its back makes things even harder. It can stand on its own to some degree, but getting it into a pose and keeping it there without a stand is pretty tough. Especially when attaching any of the three Mag Hand types (A/B/C), you'll need an extra stand just to support the Goldion Hammer. But since no stand is included with this kit, you'll have to borrow them from other kits — and honestly, for a combined kit of this size, I think they really should have thrown in two stands.

So yes, the GaoGaiGar body does struggle under the weight of the large Mag Hands and Stealth Gao II, but if you position two stands well, the poses do hold up nicely. And the poses themselves look seriously cool and unique — enough to make you forget all the assembly fatigue and the wobbly joints. Personally, aside from the joint strength issue, I feel like this kit delivers the quality and visuals of the ultimate girlpla. Of course, the price matches that status at ¥16,000, which is also pretty ultimate (...)

Either way, this is easily the most expensive and complex kit Kotobukiya has ever released in their girlpla lineup — a true epic. If you're a fan of both GaoGaiGar and girlplas, this is basically a must-have. It took me a full day just for the review shoot, but it's a landmark kit that's absolutely worth it :-)
