Optimus Prime Humikane Shimada Ver.

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is Convoy released as the Humikane Shimada Ver. Most of us know him better as Optimus Prime from Transformers, but in Japan he's always been called Convoy. The name actually goes back to Takara's Diaclone series, where he appeared as Battle Convoy — when the line transitioned into the Transformers series, the name was changed to Optimus Prime for Western markets, but Japan kept the original Convoy name since "Optimus Prime" is a bit of a mouthful in Japanese.

Wonder Woman Humikane Shimada Ver.Much like that kit, what makes this one interesting is that it's a mecha — not a human character — released in girlpla form. Along with the 2 mecha-style faces, it also comes with 2 human-style faces, so you can go for a completely different vibe. There are also 2 optional front hair parts for the human-style faces. For weapons, you get the Convoy Gun and Energy Axe, and a clear stand is included so you can pull off some mid-air poses.

The articulation is solid enough for casual posing, with smooth movement and great joint stability overall. Compared to the somewhat stiff feel of older Kotobukiya kits, the plastic itself does feel a bit softer.

All in all, this is a uniquely conceived girlpla built around a mecha motif — and personally, I think the human-style faces actually suit it better than the mecha ones. It's a little on the small side compared to your typical girlpla, which is a bit of a shame, but then again that's also part of what makes it so cute. Either way, if this fresh new take on the girlpla style appeals to you, I'd say go ahead and pull the trigger without worrying too much about quality. :-)
