Kotobukiya Super Robot War 1/100

Alteisen

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the 1/100 Huckebein Mk-II, another fan-favorite mech has joined the 1/100 Super Robot Wars lineup — the Alteisen. The older 1/144 Alteisen had decent enough color separation and proportions, but the joints on the first release were so weak that it got a lot of flak. The revised version improved things a bit, but honestly it was never quite a kit that left you feeling fully satisfied after building it.

The 1/100 Alteisen seems intent on putting those complaints to rest, delivering noticeably better quality than the 1/144 in several ways. For starters, the color separation is incredibly thorough down to the tiniest details, as you'd expect from the larger size. And despite the bulk, the joint strength is actually more solid than the 1/144. The shoulders are still a bit of a struggle to hold in an outstretched pose since the arms are heavy, but the joints throughout the legs and body are stable enough to hold both standing and action poses without issue.

In terms of gimmicks, things that weren't on the 1/144 have been added — like the cockpit hatch opening, the double-cover Square Claymore with its auto-open mechanism, and of course the LED in the head. The head LED is designed so that light seeps not just into the green eyes but also into the red center antenna, which is why two versions of the antenna are included: one in regular plastic and one in clear soft material. The hip joints also get an MG-style independent forward/backward movement gimmick, though the practicality and locking stability leave a bit to be desired. It feels more like Kotobukiya giving it a shot just to say they tried, you know?

Honestly, the real appeal of this kit isn't so much the extreme color separation or the gimmicks — it's the sheer presence that comes from that MG Sazabi-class bulk. It's big enough to make most MG kits look cute by comparison, and with the complete color separation, you get a ton of satisfaction just from a straight build.

Overall, it feels like a significant step up in quality from the 1/100 Huckebein Mk-II, and the kit has such a commanding presence that despite the slightly steep price (¥5800), it doesn't feel like money wasted. If the design appeals to you, the quality is solid enough that I'd definitely recommend building one yourself. It's got way more presence in person than in photos. :-)
