Griffon Flight Type

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + decals

Following the Aqua Type, the Flight Type Griffon has now been released. If you've seen the original series you'll know, but the Griffon is basically always in Flight Type mode. It only straps on the Aqua backpack for a few specific episodes early on — normally it flies around with wings on its back..

The main body is 99% identical to the existing Aqua Type. The only difference is the addition of a vertical tail fin on the rear that wasn't on the Aqua Pack.. So since the articulation, cockpit, inner frame, and joint characteristics are all exactly the same, for the body's features please refer to the Griffon

for reference.

Even though the build is similar, the Flight Pack is larger and has a more complex parts layout, so the price is about 300 yen higher than the Aqua Type.

The Aqua Type Griffon already had an incredible glossy finish and imposing frame, but the Flight Type is even more incredible.. With the wings fully spread, it becomes a massive flying machine stretching around 45cm. Like the other MG Patlabor kits, every single joint is really stiff, so the wings stay locked in place well when spread out — but there's no getting around the arms and waist joints popping out easily. And since the back is a bit heavier than the Aqua Type, you need to shift the feet back a little to get a good stance. Still, it's a huge relief that those massive wings lock in solidly without any wobble.

Looking at it overall.. in terms of sheer presence and how prominent it actually is in the source material, the Flight Type feels like the better pick over the Aqua Type. Of course.. if you really have to choose between the two, the right answer is just to go with whichever style suits your taste. ^^;
Either way, I'm officially declaring it the top-quality champion of the MG Patlabor lineup! ^^
