Ingram 3 ~ Reactive Armor Type

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + partial painting + decals

Following the normal version Units 1, 2, and 3, then the Reactive Armor Unit 1 and Flash Unit Unit 2, the Reactive Armor Unit 3 has now been released. The kit name is clearly Reactive Armor Unit 3, but the runners are actually set up so you can also build the Reactive Armor Unit 2. Since the kit itself shares the same structure as the existing Reactive Armor kits, please refer to the Reactive Armor Unit 1 reviewfor more detailed photos and common notes.

Looking closely, the runners for Unit 2 and Unit 3 are completely separate from each other, which suggests they originally planned to release Unit 2 and Unit 3 as individual kits, just like Unit 1. But looking at the market, Unit 1's sales weren't exactly stellar, so they probably figured releasing Unit 2 and Unit 3 separately — which would sell even less — was a bit risky, and decided to bundle them together instead. Then again, Unit 2 was also released under the Flash Unit name, so in the end, the non-standard variant lineup ended up being Unit 1 (Reactive Armor), Unit 2 (Flash Unit), and Unit 3 (Reactive Armor) — a matched set of three, just like the normal versions.

Both Unit 2 and Unit 3 appear in this review because I wanted to build both the Reactive Armor Unit 2 and Unit 3, so I made two of this kit. Of course, that's not something just anyone would do ^^; Honestly, how many of the same thing have I built at this point...

For Unit 3, the head comes as a new ECM pod-equipped type, with the ECM extended and stowed configurations done as a swappable setup. But the locking mechanism is a bit iffy, so in practice it's probably better to just fix it in the extended position.. (see the notes in the photos above)

For Unit 2, just like the Flash Unit, it comes with a movie 2 head that's completely different from the normal Unit 2 head — but unlike the Flash Unit version, the molded color on the back of the head is olive drab. And the shotgun that comes with every Unit 2 kit is included here too, but unlike the black normal version and the white Flash Unit version, this one is olive drab as well; Completely all over the place..

One of the hallmarks of the Reactive Armor kits is that they include two standing figures each, and since this kit covers both Unit 2 and Unit 3, it comes with a total of four standing figures. Six in total including the pilots. I doubt there's ever been another Bandai kit with this many figures included — before or since.

Anyway, just like the other Reactive Armor kits, this one has its share of issues — the joints are a bit loose, the rubber material tends to poke out or restrict movement during posing, and there are various other little annoyances. On the flip side, it's a kit that looks really distinctive once you do some partial painting or a full paint job and display it. (Ideally, just leave it standing still..;;)

On top of that, unlike Unit 1, Units 2 and 3 are bundled together here, so the parts count is the highest of any Ingram kit, and the overall package definitely feels substantial — which is a real plus. If you're looking for a kit that gives you a lot for your money, this one might pleasantly surprise you. And like the normal versions, I think the real appeal of this kit is in collecting all three units as a set.. Sure, building the same thing multiple times gets old, but the satisfaction of having the complete set on display is something only those who've done it will understand. ^_^;
