Right on the heels of Char's Gelgoog, the Gelgoog Cannon was released as a variation. But this variation kit is, out of all MGs across the board, the most half-hearted variation in terms of molded colors... -_-;
First off, this kit can be built as one of two Gelgoogs. There's the MS-14B Johnny Ridden custom, and the MS-14C Gelgoog Cannon spec — two choices. The two share the same main body, with only the head, forearm armor, and backpack being different; everything else is identical. The problem is that these two specs have completely different color schemes. So while the molded colors seem to be based on the Johnny Ridden unit, as you can see in the straight build photos above, the whole thing is just lazily molded in a uniform bright red;;
So even if you want to build it as the Johnny Ridden spec, you'll still need to do partial painting in black on the forearms, thighs, feet, body, and other areas to get it looking right. And if you're going for the Gelgoog Cannon spec, you'll need a full paint job from head to toe. Either way, this is basically a kit only for people who are planning to paint it.
The basic construction and structure of the Johnny Ridden unit's body is identical to Char's Gelgoog. So for a detailed review of the kit's structure, please refer to the MG Char's Gelgoog Reviewfor reference. The joint issues still vary between pre- and post-revision versions, so luck of the draw is still a factor with this kit. It's a kit you should build with low expectations for articulation and joints, and just focus on the looks and proportions ^^;
In exchange, this kit drops the rifle and shield from Char's Gelgoog and adds the cannon backpack, MS-14C forearm armor, head, beam saber unit mount, and more. In terms of overall part count and volume, it's actually the most generous of all the Gelgoog kits.
For this review, I first built and partially painted it in the MS-14B Johnny Ridden Gelgoog spec. As you can see from the photos above, I personally built two of this kit. One is the partially painted Johnny Ridden spec you see here, and the other is currently being fully painted as the Gelgoog Cannon spec. I'll add the fully painted cannon version to the review once it's done ^^ (Nobody knows when that'll be~)
Since the Johnny Ridden unit is set up to accept the cannon pack as well, even if you're building it as the Johnny Ridden spec, slapping the cannon pack on gives it a bit more of a unique and cool look. The downside is that it has no weapons other than beam sabers, so it does feel a bit bare...
As you can see, this is definitely not recommended for anyone who just enjoys straight builds, but for those looking to try something different with a paint job, the cannon pack is a unique item that gives this kit its own appeal. Still, it's hard not to feel a little disappointed — if they were going to mold it in red based on the Johnny Ridden spec anyway, and the parts are already divided up, why not just do proper color separation while they were at it...
| Category | Rating | Analysis |
| Seam Lines | ★★★★☆ | Seam lines are handled quite well. Only slightly visible on the head and torso. |
| Molding Color / Color Separation | ★★☆ | Color separation is a mess... T_T Partial painting is an absolute minimum. The red molded color itself looks nice though. |
| Proportions | ★★★★☆ | Strike a pose and it looks absolutely stunning. Large-sized even among MGs. |
| Articulation | ★ | Worst articulation among MGs; |
| Joint Strength | ★ | Worst joint looseness among MGs; though a revised version does exist. |
| Internal Frame | ★★★☆ | Frame covers a relatively large number of areas. The leg frame and pipes are great! |
| Detail | ★★★★ | External detail is nice, but the frame is a bit plain. |
| Weapons / Accessories | ★★★★☆ | Cannon pack instead of a shield. Can be built either way. Most generous volume of the bunch. |
| Parts Count / Price | ★★★★ | 261 parts total (+ 24 detail-up parts). Parts per ¥1,000: 87 |
| Uniqueness | ★★ | A somewhat half-hearted variation. For painters only. Most generous content of the bunch. |
| Dalong's Point : 63 pts. |
MG Gelgoog Cannon | 1997.3 | ¥3,400
