Zaku II F v2.0

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

As you'd expect, the F-type has been released as a variation of the Zaku 2.0. In the 1.0, you could choose between the J-type and F-type by swapping out the backpack and leg verniers, but with the v2.0, they've been released as entirely separate kits.

There are pros and cons to this.. On one hand, you lose the option to build either variant from a single kit like you could with the v2.0 — but on the other hand, each variant now has slightly more refined and faithful details, so releasing them as separate kits feels justifiable enough.

The main differences from the J-type are the backpack verniers and leg verniers — a small vernier has been added to the top of the backpack, and the main vernier at the bottom is larger. The legs also get eight small verniers added, plus one large vernier on each sole. In the v1.0, the backpack difference between the F-type and Char's custom wasn't that significant, but in the v2.0, as you can see in the photos above, the backpack styles of the J, F, and S types are clearly distinct from one another. It really feels like each unit has developed its own personality with the version upgrade.

The legs in particular now clearly distinguish the J, F, and S types. As you can see in the photos, the more verniers there are and the larger they get, the chunkier the legs become. It's actually pretty fun to observe these subtle differences :-) There are also some minor differences in the weapons — instead of the leg missile pods that came with the J-type, the F-type includes the Giant Bazooka from the High Mobility type. And as a little bonus, a colony handle is included to recreate the scene where the colony hatch is opened. (Just the handle part alone..;) Still, I think it's a pretty clever little touch.

Honestly, I've talked about the pros and cons of the Zaku 2.0 so many times now that it feels redundant to go over them again.. For the most detailed review of the base kit, please refer to the MG Zaku II J-type reviewEverything except the backpack and leg verniers is 100% identical, so please check that out.

To make a direct comparison, the F-type has about ten more parts than the J-type. That's probably due to the backpack and extra verniers, and it does make the F-type feel a bit more substantial. If you had to choose between the two at the same price, I'd probably recommend the F-type over the J-type. That might actually be why they marketed the J-type first..

The MG Zaku II F-type 2.0 was released at the same time as the Minelayer configuration, which might make the choice a bit tricky. Check out the Minelayer review for a detailed comparison — the key question is whether that 1000 yen price difference is worth it to you or not.

And for the hardcore fans, setting aside the obvious releases like the F and J types or the Shin Matsunaga/Johnny Ridden customs — you're probably more interested in seeing MSV Zakus like the Zaku Tank, Zaku Cannon, Zaku Marine, and so on get the MG treatment, right? Either way, this is still a top-quality entry in the Zaku 2.0 series, and it's a lineup I'm excited to see more of. ^^
