MG MS-14A

Gelgoog ver.2.0 ~ Mass Production

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

As expected, the first MG Gelgoog ver.2.0 variation is the
Mass Production Gelgoog (abbreviated/nicknamed "Mass Gelgoog" from here on..). In the 1.0, there were several changes — the rifle, the butt verniers, and more — which actually stirred up some debate over accuracy to the source material. With the 2.0, they've kept things clean: the body is 100% identical, and only a few accessories have been added to the rifle.

Since the base body is 100% the same as the Char's version with only the molded color changed, please refer to the MG Char's Custom Gelgoog ver.2.0 reviewfor a detailed structural breakdown. The molded color has been changed to a heavier, more subdued tone compared to the old 1.0, and it's pretty close in feel to the recently released HGUC Mass Production Gelgoog. It's a much more refined and premium-looking finish.

The only additions on the Mass Production Gelgoog are the rifle's folding bipod stand and the grenade launcher — which do look pretty cool — but for a variation release, the changes feel a bit too minimal. You can't help but wish there was a bit more to it. I'm guessing MG Gelgoog 2.0 sales weren't exactly setting the world on fire.

Just like the previously released Char's Custom Gelgoog 2.0, this kit delivers an excellent internal frame and joint strength that's in a completely different league from the 1.0. External detail is great, the overall look is great.. The one thing that might be holding it back in terms of popularity is the proportions, which aren't drastically different from the 1.0 — at a glance, the silhouette really is almost identical. Look closely and you can clearly see the difference in molded color and the level of external detail, but it doesn't have the same immediately obvious improvement that the Zaku II 2.0 had over its predecessor. Either way, it's an excellent kit on multiple fronts.. but somehow it feels like the market has undervalued it relative to its quality.

One thing — trying out some action poses with the Gelgoog 2.0 again reminded me that while it's fine on the ground, putting it on a stand is a real challenge due to its sheer weight and bulk. The legs droop under their own weight, the body tilts.. and in particular, the connection between the included stand and the hip joint attachment piece is way too loose. If that joint were just a bit tighter it would've been manageable — it's a real blemish on an otherwise great kit.

The variation extras are so sparse that it does feel like a bit of a lazy cash-grab, but even so, this kit fully maintains the outstanding quality you'd expect from the Universal Century 2.0 lineup. And at the end of the day, it was always a kit that had to come out eventually, so..
What I'm genuinely curious about, though, is whether a high-mobility backpack variant of the Gelgoog will be released separately. Personally I figured it would be included with the Mass Production kit like it was back in the 1.0 days, but it's not here.. Releasing it as a separate kit seems like it'd be a tough sell though...

Anyway, if you've been waiting for the Mass Production Gelgoog 2.0, this is a 2.0 lineup entry you can pick up without hesitation ^^

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★★★A parade of massive single-piece parts. Almost no seam lines to speak of.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★★A heavier, more stable color compared to the 1.0. Color separation is perfect.
Proportions★★★★★Does a great job capturing that heavy, imposing feel.
Articulation★★★★Despite the split skirt design, leg articulation is surprisingly a bit lacking..
Joint Strength★★★★★Joint strength is good.. but it's a big kit so it's a little on the heavy side.
Internal Frame★★★★★★★Hands-down the best MG frame released so far.
Detail★★★★★Panel lines are a touch overdone, but they're refined and precise.
Weapons / Accessories★★★★★Faithful to the basics. Slightly modified rifle.
Parts Count / Price★★★★★313 parts total. 69.6 parts per ¥1,000. Quality matches the price.
Uniqueness★★★★★A somewhat lazy variation. But the quality is excellent.
Dalong's Point : 102 pts.
