Shin Matsunaga's Zaku II v2.0

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

As expected, following the Johnny Ridden Zaku 2.0, Shin Matsunaga's Zaku has also been upgraded to 2.0. Since the overall characteristics are already based on the existing Zaku 2.0 kits, for detailed structural features please refer to the MG Zaku II Type J v2.0 reviewand the MG Zaku II High Mobility Type: Black Tri-Stars v2.0 reviewfor reference.

Overall, it delivers the expected Zaku 2.0 kit quality, and aside from the unfortunate knee articulation that doesn't quite hit 90 degrees — as you'd expect from a High Mobility type — it's a really nice kit. Like the other MG High Mobility 2.0 kits, the coloring is a bit different from the 1.0, with the side skirts and rear skirt now coming out in white. Just like with the Black Tri-Stars, the 2.0's colors are faithful to the official specs. The significance of the 2.0 upgrade seems to be not just the quality improvement, but also getting the colors properly right according to the original specs.

To summarize the features unique to Matsunaga's Zaku II 2.0:

1. Right shoulder
With two yellow stripes added to the right shoulder, the parts have been replaced, and the yellow is represented with stickers. It would've been nice if they'd done it with color separation instead — just a tiiiny bit disappointing. On top of that, a support brace has also been added to the inside of the shoulder shield.

2. Front skirt
The design on both sides of the front skirt has been slightly changed. Gives the impression of something poking out (?).

3. Leg section
The design of the rear section of the High Mobility leg has been changed, and the frame design has been slightly modified accordingly.

4. Prototype bazooka added
A Prototype Zaku bazooka is included, which is the existing High Mobility 320mm bazooka with only the magazine section changed.

As for other notable features... according to the specs, blue stripes and a wolf mark go on the spike armor, and these are rendered as waterslide decals. However, the decals are wide while the surface they go on is an awkward curve, making them quite tricky to apply. If you don't take your time and apply them carefully, you'll end up ruining them like I did (T_T). On the flip side, if you do apply them well, they should look the most natural — as you'd expect from waterslide decals... Thanks to this, the MG Matsunaga Zaku 2.0 has become a rather unusual kit that includes stickers, seals, dry decals, and waterslide decals all in one.

The rest of the basic features are the same as before, and as befitting a Zaku 2.0, the building experience is excellent. The lack of dynamic action poses due to the knee articulation is unavoidable, but the great quality and stylish looks make it easy to forgive. ^^;

With this, the version upgrades for all the Zaku II kits that were originally released as 1.0 are now complete. Of course, I'm still expecting plenty of different variations to come out going forward. Personally, Matsunaga's unit was always my favorite among the Zaku variations, but seeing it redone in that overall washed-out white (;) color scheme... I have to say the Johnny Ridden 2.0 feels a bit more "pretty" by comparison.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to more variations in the Zaku 2.0 series — no matter how many you build, it never gets old. Seems like it's about time for an MG Zaku I 2.0, don't you think? ^^
