MG RX-78-3

Gundam G3 v2.0

Kit Review

Straight build
+ Panel lining + Decals

The G3 color version of the MG First 2.0 has arrived — a variation that anyone could've seen coming. Right off the bat, unlike previous G3s which had a strong gray feel, this one came out surprisingly bright, and no matter which G3 you put next to it, none of them match in color. To be precise, even if you gathered up every official and limited G3 released so far, not a single one shares the same color scheme ^^;

I at least expected the body color to come out a bit darker, but.. it was molded in a light — very light — gray, just like the arms and legs. Since it's a fictional unit to begin with, it's really up to whoever's building it, but.. you can't help feeling like it's strayed quite a bit from the original G3 concept. That said, if you set aside comparisons with other G3s and forget about the lore entirely, the overall soft, pastel-like color scheme is actually kind of nice.

And look, I knew this was going to be a straightforward variation, but I still expected at least one thing to be added or changed — yet when you open the box, it's 100% the same runners as the normal color First 2.0. You could argue that since all the accessories were already included in the normal version there's nothing left to add, but it does feel like they just took the easy route without much effort. It's literally just a color variant kit, plain and simple.

Of course, the decals and seals are slightly different — there are 4 seals applied to the inner frame, and some of the shield and other decals and seals differ — but if you look closely, the overall seal placement isn't all that different from the normal color version either.

The kit's detailed characteristics have already been covered thoroughly in the normal color
First 2.0 review
, so please refer to that review for more info. As you'd expect from a 2.0, it delivers excellent articulation and joint strength throughout the full-body frame. That said, just like the normal color version, the small feet and retro-style proportions are still going to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing for a lot of people.

Either way, this kit is meaningful simply for the fact that an official 2.0 version G3 has been released, and unlike the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 G3 limited edition, you don't have to hunt it down — that's definitely a point in its favor. As long as you're not the type to shout "My G3 is NOT this pale and washed-out!", this seems like a perfectly enjoyable First 2.0 variation kit :-)

GOOD 3 : Perfect full-body frame, the most detailed 1/100 First ever made, G3's unique color scheme
BAD 3 : No changes whatsoever beyond the color. Less appealing than the main color version. Slightly awkward retro proportions

Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★★Yet another unique G3 color scheme. Molded color and color separation are both great.

Articulation★★★★★It's a 2.0, so a perfect score here is a given.
Joint Strength★★★★★As long as you're careful with the skirt, it's generally solid overall.
Internal Frame★★★★★A full-body frame worthy of the 2.0 name.
Detail★★★★★The exterior goes for simplicity, but the interior is plenty detailed.

Parts Count / Price★★★★★363 parts total. Parts per ¥1,000: 86.4.
