● Differences from Ver.Ka ●
Normally I do kit comparisons at the very end, but...
since this kit is a partial revision/upgrade of the existing kit,
the most important thing is what's different from the original Unicorn Ver.Ka,
so let's go over the differences first.
Front and rear comparison.
Just looking at the appearance, they're almost identical.
The Ver.Ka and the OVA ver. look like twins..
The most obvious visual difference is the seals and decals.
The Ver.Ka stays true to its name with an overwhelming amount of flashy seals and decals,
while the OVA ver. has a more modest amount, on par with a typical MG.
(Way easier to work with too~)
The blue on the backpack and feet has been changed to a metallic color similar to a titanium finish.
Also, all the gray inner frame-related parts have been changed to a dark gunmetal color,
giving the OVA ver. an overall slightly metallic feel.
To see which parts were changed, just take a look at this kit's leftover parts.
The original Ver.Ka parts that were replaced in the OVA ver. are left behind.
As you can see, some of the head armor, the center rear armor, and the knee and leg armor have been changed.
Comparison of the shin side armor.
You can see that the structure behind the knee is slightly smaller on the OVA ver.
The vernier cover below the knee at the back has also been shortened at the top to make room for the knee to bend.
The parts around the verniers below the knee have also been shortened at the top to make room.
That area — the back of the knee — has essentially been trimmed down.
So there's a bit more room for the knee joint to bend.
The gap at the top of the vernier cover is also reduced, so it opens up much more.
As a result, the knee bend angle is greater than the Ver.Ka's — you can get roughly 90 degrees now.
Honestly, the Ver.Ka's knee articulation was just way too terrible.. -.-;
On the Ver.Ka, the center rear armor awkwardly stuck up..
and got in the way when rotating the waist, making it hard to turn.
On the OVA ver., that armor piece is smaller, so it no longer interferes with waist movement.
So on the OVA ver., the waist rotates a full 360 degrees.
The head armor changed on the OVA ver..
At a glance, it's really hard to tell what's actually different.
Look closely and you'll see that vulcans have been added next to the top of the head.
(My panel lining pen was too thick so the panel lines aren't pretty — sorry about that..)
Because of the added vulcans, part of the side head armor has been slightly changed.
So in Unicorn Mode, vulcans have been added to the sides of the head..
but you really have to look closely to notice..;;
Also, the OVA ver. includes a separate fully-spread head antenna piece for Destroy Mode.
It's more stable than the folding antenna, so it's a handy addition.
On the OVA ver., the body's frame parts have become gunmetal,
but the weapons have actually gotten lighter, going to gray.
Shield comparison.
Aside from the reduced seals and decals, it doesn't look much different,
but the inner mechanical parts have been changed to gunmetal along with the body frame.
It's a minor thing, but..
the beam saber color has been changed from pink to light blue.
Now, back to the OVA ver. review..
Outer armor removed.
This kit is a real pain to take the armor on and off T_T
Internal frame.
With the frame going from gray to gunmetal, it has a more intense look to it.
Upper body and head
The torso with the cockpit visible inside..
Legs and feet.
The frame lets you strip off all the armor right down to the sole.
Even with just the frame, 90 degrees is the limit for the knee joint.
Still, the improved knees do make the articulation a bit better.
Articulation.
Even with the improvements, it's only about on par with a typical 1/100 No Grade.
On the plus side, the waist now rotates a full 360 degrees.
Bazooka action poses.
Still pretty hard to get a really natural-looking pose.
Shooting pose on the Action Base.
Looks a bit better up on a stand.
Double beam saber action.
With the knees bending more, it definitely looks more dynamic.
Destroy Mode
Upper body
Head.
Using the fixed antenna gives it a more stable look.
Side/rear view
Legs
Standing shooting pose.
Well.. it's gotten a little more natural.
Recreating the box art.
Just the waist rotation + 90-degree knee bend alone seems to make it look way more dynamic.
Comparison with the Ver.Ka in Destroy Mode.
Again, there's not much visible difference in appearance.
