The Rick-Dom of Char Aznable — the man known in the Gundam world simply as "that guy" — has gotten the MG treatment. The Rick-Dom body itself is 100% identical to the existing MG Rick-Dom, with only the tiny pilot part in the cockpit swapped out for Char. ^^;; What's different is Char's signature "sausage" molded color. And with the price going up ¥500, the Char's Dom Machine Gun and a 1/20 Char figure have been added. Since the body's frame, structure, and all its features are exactly the same as the Rick-Dom, please refer to the MG Dom review and MG Rick-Dom reviewfor more detailed coverage.
First off, Char's signature "sausage" molded color came out looking really smooth and clean. It's a color that's a bit tricky for a digital camera to capture accurately, but it's honestly one of the most refined-looking shades in the Char sausage color lineup so far. The Char's Zaku II that came out early on had the worst molded color, but it got better with the Char's Gelgoog, and even better here with the Dom. If you were worried about the molded color, you can rest easy.
It's still the masterpiece MG Dom with its excellent quality, so there's nothing to complain about with the kit itself. The only slightly annoying thing is the ¥4,500 price tag — ¥500 more than the other Dom kits. Whether the newly added accessories are worth that extra ¥500 is probably going to vary from person to person.
The added Char's Dom Machine Gun looks great in terms of style. It's interesting that the grip comes in two versions so you can mix and match, and the idea of making the grenade launcher detachable is a fresh touch. In practice though, you're really just going to end up picking one combination and sticking with it — it's not exactly a feature that wows you in action. You'll probably end up going with the large grip and launcher combo almost every time;;
Here's one issue that didn't come up with the other Dom kits... The Dom's double-jointed fingers look great, but they've always had a bit of a weak grip. It wasn't really a problem before because the larger weapons all had pegs that could lock into the palm. And the standard machine gun included with the MG Dom doesn't have a peg either, but it's light enough that holding it isn't an issue. The heat saber types without a locking peg were always a bit tricky to hold, though — that was a common issue.
But... this newly added Char's Dom Machine Gun has no locking peg, and it's heavy.. -_-; So the Dom's weak grip just can't hold it tightly. The newly added weapon has suddenly brought that grip weakness — which was barely noticeable before — front and center as a real flaw. It keeps dropping or sitting loosely in the hand, and honestly you get a more secure hold just plugging the beam bazooka into the palm peg. It's a fresh new weapon addition, but man, what a dilemma;;
The other addition is the 1/20 figure of the man himself! The figure of a certain someone seems to have its own value. It's not exactly easy to get your hands on one, after all...
Anyway, whether these two additions justify the ¥500 price increase is for each person to decide. But all things considered — the masterpiece-level quality, the fact that it's Char's personal unit, and the included Char figure — I'd say this kit ranks pretty high in terms of purchase value. Though it still feels like it would've been an absolute steal at the original ¥4,000. ^^;
