Gato's Gelgoog

Kit Review

Straight build + partial paint + panel lining + decals

The Gelgoog variation line, which everyone thought was done, has made a comeback after 6 years; Following Char's Rick Dom, the Gelgoog returns as a long-awaited variation. But despite all that time in between, it comes out with zero quality improvements. T_T The fourth Gelgoog is none other than the unit of Anavel Gato, famously known as the "Nightmare of Solomon." Since it's essentially a molded color variation kit, the articulation, joints, frame, and all other structural characteristics are identical to the previous Gelgoog kits. For detailed construction info, please refer to the MG Gelgoog Char's Custom reviewfor reference.

The original MG Gelgoog trio drew a lot of criticism for their extremely poor articulation and joint strength, yet they were also MGs that stirred up a love-hate relationship thanks to their impressive overall presence, detail, and the craftsman spirit of the developers. And it's pretty well known that some detail areas and the joint polycaps did receive revisions along the way.

But... given when it was released, Gato's Gelgoog should have used the revised joints and been less loose than the early Gelgoogs... yet for some reason, the one I built is just as floppy as the first release. T_T Loose knees, loose waist, loose arms, zero grip strength... On the other hand, when I built the Gelgoog Cannon that was reprinted after Gato's Gelgoog came out, it clearly felt like the joints had been revised. And yet, looking at impressions from a few people who built Gato's Gelgoog, some say they can feel the stability of the revised joints... I honestly have no idea what's going on @.@

For now, given that my kit turned out floppy, I'm pretty skeptical about whether all of them got properly revised. Is it just luck of the draw when it comes to joint strength? Not like I can build multiple copies of Gato's unit to find out;; Either way, just because it came out much later doesn't mean you can assume 100% that the joints are reinforced. Hmm.

Gato's Gelgoog went up 500 yen with the addition of the Prototype beam rifle and Gato figure, making it the most expensive Gelgoog of the bunch. The new beam rifle for Gato's unit is the largest, most detailed, and best-looking of the lot. It's quite satisfying, and together with the figure, it feels like the 500 yen increase is more or less justified.

One thing — Gato's unit has slightly different coloring on the neck area, and as you'd expect, there's no color separation to speak of. So if you want it to look right, partial painting is needed there. The yellow on the cockpit area does have a separate part, but color separation wasn't taken that far, so it's handled with a sticker. Compared to the Gelgoog Cannon, though, this is pretty minor;;

I'm not entirely sure why they suddenly revisited the Gelgoog (which wasn't exactly well-received) after several years... but the lack of any clear improvements is still a bit of a letdown. If there's any value to this kit, it's really just the fact that Anavel Gato's unit — the Nightmare of Solomon — finally got made. The new rifle that comes with it definitely looks cool, though it also pushed the price up. If you're a Gato fan, it's a must-buy, but for everyone else... it's a bit of a tough sell. ^^;

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★★☆Seam lines are handled quite well overall. Only slightly visible on the head and torso.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★Color separation is mostly well done, but the neck area needs partial painting.
Proportions★★★★☆When posed and displayed, the presence is no joke. Large-sized even among MGs.
ArticulationWorst articulation among MGs.
Joint StrengthWorst joint looseness among MGs; though revised versions do exist.
Internal Frame★★★☆Frame covers a relatively large number of areas. The leg frame and pipes are great!
Detail★★★★External detail is good, but the frame is a bit plain.
Weapons / Accessories★★★★☆Gato's dedicated rifle looks absolutely awesome! Gato figure included too.
Parts Count / Price★★★☆252 parts total (+ 24 detail-up parts). Parts per ¥1,000: 72. +500 yen;
Uniqueness★★Enough with the Gelgoog already — barely revised, barely changed!
