Char's Gelgoog ver. O.Y.W 0079 (PS2 soft)

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

The last of the OYW Zeon four is the Gelgoog. It was probably the most anticipated kit among the four — because despite having pretty decent quality underneath, it had been getting a lot of flak for its incredibly loose joints. And since even the more recent Gato's Gelgoog had joint strength that was basically a lottery, there was a lot of curiosity about whether this latest OYW version would finally get it right.

Well, the verdict is: the joints pass. This is my sixth Gelgoog build (-_-;;), and the polycap joints are actually tighter than even the mid-run revised version. The previously floppy double waist joint, the loose elbows and shoulders, the wobbly leg connections and knee joints — all of them have been reinforced enough to feel above-average in terms of stiffness. Thanks to that, unlike the old Gelgoogs, this one can actually hold a solid pose and stand at attention! I'm genuinely moved.. T_T

That said, the ankle ball joints still feel a little loose.. but since the ankle's range of motion is so limited to begin with, it's hard to really notice whether they're loose or not -_-;; A case where a flaw cancels itself out?

Anyway, just the fact that the joints have been properly fixed gives this kit a sudden and dramatic boost in overall quality. The massive size (and seeing it in person makes it feel even bigger compared to other MS than photos suggest), the surprisingly well-done inner frame for an older kit, the excellent armor design with almost no visible seam lines — there are clearly a lot of things going for it. The one thing that's still as bad as ever, though, is the articulation — it's still the worst among MGs T_T. I just console myself by saying it's a kit that lives and dies by how good it looks standing on a shelf. Since the structure itself is the same as the original, if you want a more detailed look at how it's built, check out the MG Gelgoog ~ Char's Custom reviewfor reference ^^

As for the changed molded color — as you can see in the photos, it's very close to the shield color of MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079. A truly pale, washed-out pinkish "mystery meat" color... it's a soft, pastel pink, so it doesn't look garish at all. Personal taste will vary, but it feels more "Char-like" than the original's somewhat ambiguous orangey Char color. And since all the OYW series kits share that same pastel tone, they look great together.

In conclusion, we finally have a Gelgoog you can recommend without hesitation— and that's what makes this release meaningful. It's one of the few kits that still shows the craftsmanship and pioneering spirit of the original developers, yet it was always awkward to recommend due to those fatal joint issues. This OYW Gelgoog, however, is genuinely worth recommending. If you've never gotten your hands on the Gelgoog despite its considerable charm, this is the one to get! Sure, it doesn't hold a candle to the ultra-high-quality kits of recent years, but it's definitely a kit with its own appeal!

One last side note.. each of the OYW Zeon four seems to be missing something compared to the originals (Zaku — hatch sticker, Dom & Gouf — figures), but this Gelgoog doesn't leave anything out compared to the original kit ^^;; Is that a plus? I'd say so — it's a kit that stings a little less ^^

- Wrapping up the OYW version series reviews -

The OYW Zeon four (excluding MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079) are essentially simple color variant releases with no structural changes. That said, the fact that the weak joints — a common flaw of these older MGs — have all been reinforced over time, and that they've been given soft, understated pastel molded colors, feels like a meaningful update. There are occasional gripes about missing stickers or figures, which is a bit of a letdown.

For those who already own the original versions, there's not a whole lot of reason to double-dip — but for those who don't, these are generally worth recommending. The reinforced joints in particular deserve high marks, and they make the kits feel noticeably less dated. And when you line up all four, intentionally color-coordinated as they are, the visual cohesion between them is really something!

As the four iconic Zeon units of the One Year War, it's worth appreciating that they've come back with at least some improvements. ^^
