Zeta Gundam v2.0 ~ HD Color ver.

Kit Review

Straight build
+ decals

The MG Zeta Gundam 2.0 HD Color version has been released as the third entry in the HD series, commemorating the Blu-ray release of the new Zeta Gundam theatrical films. Like the previous kits, the basic concept here is the same as the Mk-II HD — it's a variant kit combining gloss injection + HD decals. For the basic construction and transformation process, please refer to the MG Zeta Gundam v2.0 reviewfor reference.

The molded colors on the Zeta 2.0 HD version are brighter compared to the standard release. Where the standard version had a body color with a subtle jade/teal tint, this one is molded in a pure, clean white. On top of that, the gloss injection gives everything a very crisp, vivid look — the blue is a bit deeper, while the red and yellow are mostly unchanged.

In the end though.. honestly, just glancing at the molded colors alone, the difference isn't all that obvious. Side by side you can tell there's a slight difference, but it's nowhere near as noticeably glossy as the Titans Mk-II HD version. It kind of feels like white/blue/red Gundams just don't benefit as much from gloss injection. It really seems like gloss injection works best on mobile suits with deeper, richer colors.

The main concern before the Zeta 2.0 HD version came out was actually the waterslide decals.. Since it's a transforming kit, you're putting a lot of hand pressure on it, and there was a real worry about whether the waterslide decals would survive the transformation in one piece. Sure, you could topcoat it, but it's kind of ironic to spray a finishing coat over a gloss injection kit that was specifically made to show off that shiny molded surface..

Fortunately, Bandai seems to have anticipated this — compared to the Mk-II HD versions, they reduced the number of waterslide decals and significantly increased the clear seals instead. When I actually tried transforming it, the design is set up so you can mostly avoid touching the waterslide decal areas, and not a single decal came off. With the HD Mk-II you had to accept losing a decal or two when posing it, so personally I think they put some serious thought into the design this time around.

The concept behind the original MG Zeta 2.0 was "perfect transformation," and as a result, the joint durability did have some slightly worrying aspects. One of the benefits of the gloss injection HD version is that the joints end up stiffer, and the Zeta 2.0 HD version definitely benefits from that. The joint strength is more stable compared to the standard version, and it just feels a lot more reassuring to handle. ^^

In conclusion, the gloss injection doesn't bring dramatic changes, but it does give the kit a noticeably crisper look overall. Still, it is an HD Color version after all.. and in terms of pursuing that bright, vivid HDTV-like appearance, I'd say it's a success. On top of that, the joints are sturdier than the standard version while coming in at the same price (¥5000), so if you're looking to pick up the Zeta 2.0 for the first time, you've got a wider range of options now. Either way, personally speaking — the Zeta 2.0 is just one of those kits that never fails to impress, no matter when you build it. :-)
