Gundam Mk-II v2.0 ~ Titans

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + stickers/decals

As anyone could've predicted, the Mk-II v2.0 Titans version has been released — a color variant of the AEUG Mk-II v2.0. But this Titans Mk-II v2.0 can practically be considered an upgrade to v2.1. That's because it fixes the waist articulation, which was the biggest complaint about the Mk-II v2.0!

The AEUG Mk-II v2.0 drew a lot of criticism from fans for having a waist that barely moved at all — the complete opposite of the box art, which shows it twisting dramatically at the waist. Everything else had great articulation, so the waist being completely stuck in place just felt weirdly unbalanced.

To their credit, Bandai took the complaints on board and quickly revised the mold for the Titans version so the waist moves fully. By separating the previously fixed waist part from the lower body and splitting it into two separate pieces, it's now capable of a full 180-degree horizontal rotation — not a polycap joint, but it gets the job done. The overall dynamic range of poses has improved as a result.

The problem, though.. is that it's pretty bitter news for anyone who already built the first release AEUG Mk-II v2.0. If they were going to do it right, they should've made it work perfectly from the start — instead, they waited until everyone who was going to buy it had already bought it, then fixed it. On top of that, it's pretty much a given that future reprints of the AEUG Mk-II v2.0 will also come with the working waist.. so in short, people who bought the first release are just left telling themselves they got a rare first-edition. Bandai fixed the problem, but it's hard for them to come out of this looking good.

Anyway, just looking at the fix itself, it's a welcome change — but it does set a not-so-great precedent. Since the basic kit characteristics are the same as the existing AEUG version (aside from the waist), for a more detailed review, please refer to the MG Gundam Mk-II AEUG version review.

The overall quality is still top-tier, but the joints that feel slightly loose and the leg connection parts that tend to pop out (between the ball joint that connects to the body and the thigh) remain a bit of an unresolved issue.

Beyond that, the charismatic Titans coloring has come out looking great. It's a bit deeper and more refined than the v1.0 — the body color in particular is a pure black, which makes it look even sharper. That said, gate marks tend to show up pretty easily given the color, so you'll want to be extra careful when cleaning up the gates, same as before.

One standout thing about this Titans version.. is the fantastic box art. It depicts one of the scenes from early in the Zeta anime where Kamille snatches the Mk-II, and compared to other box arts, the dynamism and sense of urgency really shine through — it's a masterpiece. For old-school fans, this box art alone might be enough reason to buy it..

Anyway, it was obviously going to come out eventually, and with the weak point fixed on top of that, there's no question it's a high-quality kit. At this level of quality, you could buy three and build all three units without any regrets! ^^
