Strike Freedom : Full Burst Mode

Kit Review

Straight build +

partial painting + panel lining + decals

Interestingly, the MG Strike Freedom was released simultaneously in both a standard edition and a special edition. The official name of the special edition is "Strike Freedom Gundam Full Burst Mode." The differences between the standard and Full Burst Mode versions are as follows.

1. Some joints replaced with plated parts
2. Multi-purpose action base included
3. Clear parts and support arms for recreating Full Burst Mode added
4. A3-size (twice the size of A4) high-quality plastic poster included
5. Sticker/decal coloring changed
6. Price increased accordingly from ¥4800 to ¥7000

Other than that, the basic parts composition and main body structure are 100% identical to the standard edition, so for a more detailed review of the kit itself, please refer to the MG Strike Freedom Gundam reviewfirst. This review mainly covers the differences only.

So let's go through the differences one by one.. The most noticeable thing on the body is the plated joints, which represent Strike Freedom's signature glowing joints. It doesn't quite have the shine you'd expect from plating — that's because it's not a glossy coat but rather a semi-gloss finish similar to the Extra Finish style. The plating quality itself is decent enough, but..

Rather than applying plating across the entire kit, it's only been applied to select major joints with a lot of exposure. In other words, not all of the poop-brown frame parts and joints from the standard edition have been coated — only about a third of them. As you can see from the runner shots and box opening review, only two small runners are coated. So both in the frame shots and the finished build, the old poop-brown and the plated parts are mixed together in a somewhat messy way.

The exposed frame at the knees is poop-brown while the joints are plated, which looks awkward. On the wings, the DRAGOON mounting sections are plated but the upper joints are poop-brown, which also feels off. On the body, the chest and shoulder ducts are poop-brown while the central beam cannons are plated.. it goes on like that. The plating does look great, I'll give it that, but this stingy, half-hearted approach to coating is a bit of a letdown.. T_T

The plated parts were made by selecting only the parts that would be coated from the standard edition's joint parts, reorganizing them into new runners, and molding them with undergates. Thanks to that, most of the plated parts don't show gate marks on the outside — but it's not perfect either, as gate marks are still plainly visible on the back of the knees/ankles and on the fingers. Falls just a little short.

And since the plated joints are included as separate runners, the original poop-brown joints that were replaced are still left over. So the body itself can actually be assembled as a plain poop-brown standard Strike Freedom. However, one of the wing inner frame runners has been entirely replaced with a plated runner, so you can't build the wings with the same poop-brown frame as the standard edition. In other words, the Full Burst Mode kit cannot be built completely as a standard edition kit. Of course, if you were going to do that, there'd be no reason to buy the Full Burst Mode in the first place ^^;

Anyway, the attempt is good, the quality is good, and the effect is decent.. (the plating on the wings in particular is stunning) but the limited scope of the coating leaves a lot to be desired. If it had been a full-body plated frame, this would've been an absolutely killer kit.. It seems like they went this route to keep costs from rising too much. Tsk.

On top of that, the coloring of all the stickers and decals has been changed. Befitting a gold-plated kit, all the stickers have been changed to gold tones, and the decals have also been changed to an overall bright silver tone. The shapes and placement positions are 100% the same, but the change in coloring does give the kit a slightly different feel. Though some people seem to dislike it since it ends up looking more monochrome compared to the standard edition (with everything becoming a single tone)..

In addition to the standard Strike Freedom stand, this kit also includes the multi-purpose action base that first appeared with the 1/100 Legend Gundam. It's been very well received, and recently it's also been sold separately for ¥500. For a review of the stand itself, please refer to here— and unlike the regular stand, it's molded in a nice clear blue, so it looks great too. That said, if they were going to include this multi-purpose action base, I think they should've dropped the original Strike Freedom stand. It just seems like an unnecessary cost driver. Having two stands doesn't help when you can only use one at a time, tsk tsk..

The support arms and effect parts for recreating Full Burst Mode are decent enough, and combining them with the action base for display does look pretty impressive. Though it takes up so much space that I have to wonder how many people would actually keep it displayed like that.. ^^; The sheer volume of it made it a real pain to photograph too.. And the other bonus — the A3-size high-quality plastic poster — honestly feels like an unnecessary extra. Might've been better to drop that and lower the price instead..

One thing though.. there's actually an advantage that came with the Full Burst Mode version — the plating applied to the major joints creates a tightening effect that's typical of plated parts. Basically, the added coating layer reduces the play in the joints, making them feel tighter overall. The standard edition already had solid joint strength, but the key improvement in the Full Burst Mode is that the plated fingers have noticeably better grip. With the standard edition, it was really hard to get it to hold the beam rifle, but thankfully the Full Burst Mode is stiffer thanks to the coating, so it can hold it reasonably well. It's still not super tight, but it's definitely better than the standard edition.

Anyway, all things considered, it's clearly a better kit than the standard edition — you get more accessories and at least some plating applied. But whether it's worth the extra ¥2200? That's going to come down to personal opinion. If it had been a full-body gold plated frame, it would've been an absolute must-buy.. but the half-hearted plating might actually end up diminishing the overall impression for some people. Maybe that's why the biggest selling point ends up feeling less like the plating itself and more like the improved grip that comes as a side effect of it;;

That said, having plating is definitely better than not having it. The plated frame on the rear wing Super DRAGOON mounts in particular looks really gorgeous. Personally, I can't help but feel that if they'd dropped the original stand and the extra poster and expanded the plated joints a bit more.. this would've come very close to being a perfect kit.

I'm sure plenty of people are agonizing over whether to get the standard edition or the Full Burst Mode — and honestly, I can't give you a clear-cut answer either. If I had to choose, the Full Burst Mode is definitely the better kit, but the standard edition is already excellent in its own right.. so whether it's worth investing an extra ¥2200 is something you'll have to decide for yourself after reading through the reviews carefully.

But then again.. seeing quite a few people end up buying both after going back and forth.. you have to hand it to Bandai — their sales strategy is truly something else ^^;;
