RG Gaogiager

Goldymarg

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

This kit is the RG Goldymarg, released following the RG GaoGaiGar. In Japan it came out as a Premium Bandai online exclusive, but overseas it was distributed as a general retail release. RG GaoGaiGarJust like that kit, this is an RG that relies on precision detail and transformation gimmicks rather than an inner frame-based construction.

The overall parts layout and assembly method are similar to the RG GaoGaiGar, and since the parts are on the larger side for an RG, it goes together faster than you'd expect. That said, the crisp panel lines and transformation gimmicks will definitely have you shouting "This is RG!" The trade-off is that all the focus on the transformation gimmick leaves the articulation feeling a bit vague, without many great poses to strike. It feels like the emphasis is less on Goldymarg itself and more on the collaboration with GaoGaiGar.

The transformation gimmick into Goldy Tank and the process for pulling off Hammer Hell and Heaven are well thought out. However, the pins that lock the arms and legs in place after transformation aren't all that sturdy. Joint strength is good enough that the overall stability after transforming is decent, but the pin-and-hole connections meant to lock each part into its exact position are just too loose, which leaves a bit to be desired.

The combination gimmick with GaoGaiGar itself is fine, but the arm formed by the Mag Hand + Goldy Hammer combo is just way too heavy. That's why a joint part to support the underside of the Goldion Hammer and an Action Base 5 are included, but even with those, it feels more like "barely holding on" than "solidly locked in place." Even with all these support parts in play, the slightest nudge will send the pose collapsing or the whole thing toppling over. So poses like hoisting the hammer high or gripping it with both hands are pretty much out of the question — your best bet for a stable display is probably just standing there holding it like a pool cue, waiting for your turn.

So while the build experience and gimmicks definitely give off that high-quality RG vibe, some of the shaky locking mechanisms and the sheer weight do leave a few things to be desired. That said, for fans of GaoGaiGar, these are issues well worth putting up with — and above all, there's no doubt that this is one accessory that makes RG GaoGaiGar look even more awesome. :-)
