1/100 ZGMF-X1000

Zaku Warrior + Gunner & Blaze Wizard

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

I always thought it was a bit odd that the 1/100 Zaku Warrior came out in Luna Maria's red and Rey's white versions before the standard mass-production blue... but sure enough, here it is in the blue mass-production colors. And it's not just the plain body either — it comes packed with both the Blaze Wizard and Gunner Wizard weapon packs that were previously included in the earlier 1/100 Zaku Warrior kits.

In the anime, it's Athrun who pilots the light yellow-green Zaku Warrior with the Blaze Wizard, and Dearka who pilots the one with the Gunner pack. So naturally, both Dearka's and Athrun's character plates are included — but they cheaped out and only threw in one stand. -_-;

As you can see, this kit is essentially the existing Zaku Warrior body with a different molded color, and the weapon packs are carried over straight from the previous 1/100 Zaku Warrior kits without any changes. So there's nothing uniquely new about it — it's a pretty shameless color variation kit, to be honest. For details on the body and each weapon pack, please refer to the 1/100 Gunner Zaku Warrior ~ Luna Maria's version review and the 1/100 Blaze Zaku Phantom ~ Rey's version reviewThe Gunner Wizard has exactly the same molded colors as before, but the Blaze Wizard in this kit does have the red verniers changed to more of an orange tone.

Since it includes both weapon packs, the box is big, there are a lot of parts, and the price is ¥3000 — which is MG-level pricing for a No Grade 1/100. That said, the base body was excellent to begin with, and both weapon packs look great with solid detail.

It's a pretty shameless variation with zero new effort put in... but the kit quality itself is so good and it feels so generously packed that it's hard not to enjoy it. It's kind of like a Zaku Warrior all-in-one gift set, if you will. Personally, I actually find the light yellow-green molded color more refined and premium-looking compared to the other Zaku Warrior releases.

Either way, this is clearly an A-grade kit in terms of quality. Solid joints, great articulation, decent detail, good proportions, plenty of parts, excellent color separation... Maybe that's why even this shameless little variation is hard to stay mad at. ^^;
