Force Impulse Gundam + Sword Silhouette

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

With the announcement of the MG Freedom Gundam Extra Finish version, the no-grade Impulse was suddenly released in Extra Finish as well. This is clearly an attempt to pair the two kits together — and sure enough, the box art for both kits connects into one combined image. :-) The MG Freedom is one of the top-selling MG kits out there, so that one makes sense.. but this Impulse isn't nearly as popular, and yet it still got the bold treatment of a pricey Extra Finish release despite being a no-grade.

The official product name for this Extra Finish version of the Impulse Gundam is "Force Impulse Gundam + Sword Silhouette" — and just as the name says, it's simply the existing 1/100 Force Impulse Gundam kit with the Sword Pack added in. (The Silhouette Flyer that comes with the Sword Silhouette was already included in the original Force Impulse Gundam kit.) And all the runners are given a matte metallic coating in Extra Finish style.

This kit appears to have been released to commemorate one of the most iconic battles in SEED Destiny — the Freedom vs. Impulse Gundam fight. Since the Force Impulse Gundam uses its sword to shoot down the Freedom in the anime, it makes sense that it was released in the Force Pack + Sword Pack configuration. You can already smell that vibe coming off the connected box art~~^^

The overall coating quality is decent, but the blatant seam lines typical of a no-grade kit are still there for all to see. The coating itself also feels a bit thinner compared to the MG Freedom.. especially the black areas, where the coating is noticeably weaker — to the point where it's hard to tell apart from the standard version. The silver coating is consistent and looks great, but the lack of any consideration for gate marks is a real shame. I guess you can't expect too much from a no-grade.. ^^;

Since the core body itself is the same as the existing no-grade 1/100 Force Impulse Gundam, 1/100 Force Impulse Gundam Reviewfor reference. One slight difference is that the joints are a bit stiffer. That's actually a characteristic quirk of plated kits — the coating layer adds thickness to the plastic surface, which tightens up the tolerances at the connection points. You could look at it as a good thing, since the joints end up feeling more solid. :-)

The quality is decent enough, but the biggest issue with this kit is honestly the steep ¥6,000 price tag. That's a lot to ask for — a No Grade plated kit at a price where you could pick up two solid MGs instead...? Hmm~~ This one's really only worth recommending to die-hard Impulse Gundam fans or people who are really into the Extra Finish look. ^^;
