Club G MG

Johnny Ridden's Gelgoog

Kit Review

Straight build + PET seals + waterslide decals (large decals only)

This kit is the MG Johnny Ridden's Gelgoog, released as a Club G (Premium Bandai) online exclusive. It takes the MG Char's Gelgoog Ver.2.0 released as a standard retail kit in 2007, swaps the molded colors to red, and adds an expanded weapons loadout. The distinctive Type-B backpack and rocket launcher have been added as newly tooled parts.

First and foremost, it's just great that Johnny Ridden's Gelgoog has finally gotten a proper MG release. Back in 1997, the standard retail MG Gelgoog Cannoncould technically be built as Johnny Ridden's unit, but it was notorious for its nonsensical molded color combination. If you wanted to do the camouflage-patterned Gelgoog Cannon, you'd need a full repaint — and if you wanted to do Johnny Ridden's unit instead, the forearms, thighs, and feet all came out in red when they should've been black. Either way, painting was mandatory no matter what you were going for, and it became the poster child for lazy color variants. (The rocket launcher for Johnny Ridden's unit was left out entirely too..)

So here we are, 15 years later in 2023, and we've finally gotten a proper Johnny Ridden's Gelgoog — even if it is an online exclusive. It's based on the still-excellent MG Gelgoog 2.0, so the frame quality, volume, and detail are all top-notch. The distinctive Type-B backpack is newly tooled with great color separation, making it incomparably better than the 2008 version, and the dedicated rocket launcher is cleanly executed in a way that's worthy of the MG line. The Giant Bazooka from the MG Zaku 2.0 is also reused and included, with new tooled parts on the grip to fit the Gelgoog 2.0's hands. On top of that, three joint parts for mounting weapons onto the backpack have been added as a bonus, and interestingly, the scope sections on the weapons use thick, high-gloss PET seals.

The MG Gelgoog 2.0 frame still shows off great detail and solid joint strength, holding whatever pose you put it in just fine. It is a bit too heavy for an Action Base though, so the stability of the stand joint parts is a little iffy. That said, if you get the center of gravity right, you can get it airborne well enough — though for long-term display, you'll probably want to reinforce it with double-sided tape or something similar.

All in all, this is a kit that's been successfully upgraded after 16 years, and if you're a fan of Universal Century MSV units, it's definitely worth picking up without hesitation. :-)
